runout ultraportable 20 mm | engineersblue
A 20 g training edge whose angle adjusts, small enough to go wherever the climbing does.
problem
Portable training edges are mostly wood: bulky, heavy, and often little more than a machined slot fixed at 90 degrees that slips under load. They compete for space in a backpack already full of essential gear, so they get left at home.
solution
A single piece of 3D-printed AlSi10Mg aluminium: 20 g, 108 mm long, a standard 20 mm edge with a 6 mm radius, tested to 200 kg. The design lets the edge angle be adjusted, and it is small enough to live in a backpack or boulder bucket.
Runout is engineersblue’s own product brand. I started it because the studio is endlessly making products, and a tilting climbing edge was one that was needed. The UltraPortable 20 mm is its first product.

Climbing gear is one of the few categories people buy once and keep. Lightweighting is mandatory on safety-rated kit, but training gear usually skips that thinking, and a portable edge whose angle can be changed didn’t exist in a form worth carrying.
The whole product sits with engineersblue. The engineering came down to solving the rotational moment that tips a hanging edge, then packaging the answer in an ergonomic, portable form: many rapid prototypes for rotation testing and size adjustments, and load testing to 200 kg. Metal 3D printing and anodising are being sourced from a single contract manufacturer that provides everything, and the brand and direct sales sit in-house too.
Development is in the final Produce stage. Suppliers are engaged and sales channels are being established.
